If you've got rid of it..criticize it!!!

For 12 long years ive had to study bangla. Its been one long meaningless struggle. Now that i'm rid of it , i can look back on it with memories...extremely unpleasant memories!!!So,to vent my feelings i decided to blog about it...and so i present my review of ISC bangla 2007!!!

Nishkriti(Saratchandra something or the other)-I
have no idea why this book is in the present syllabus..it reads like a Balaji TeleFilms production for God's sake!!!!Whatever else old man Saratchandra was,he was certainly no human. This man is twisted..twisted like a rubberband!!!Only a base and sick mind could get itself to write about petty feuds like the ones in nishkriti. And it takes an even sicker mind to prescribe it to class 12 students..the ISC council seriously needs to revamp itself.....or in a few years time, students might just be forced to watch" Kyunki Kkusum Bhi Kabhi LAdki Thi (Operation ke pehle)"!!!!(And i practice what i preach......i havent read the book past 5 pages)

Stories-well atleast they dont have too many hidden meanings..heres a look at the worst of them:-
Swapnadarshan-
I couldnt make head or tail of it..couldnt even figure out which laguage its written in.If any of u tortured yourself into reading it , post a comment....i'm way out of my depth on this one!!!!
Alaler Ghore Dulal-lame story, not at all original..and why the hell are all gurus calls Prashanna?????
Babu-Would be a nice satire if it were written in bangla instead of a lame attempt at blank verse!!
Shabek Manushatta(Haraprasad Shastri)-Well hasnt he lost touch with reality...dont help yourself he says....help others.Dont strive for perfection..stay mediocre with the rest of your mediocre friends.Well Mr Haraprasad we wont...we dont want to end up like you..writing crappy stories for a living and getting criticized on some natty blog!!
Shekaler Shukh Dukkho(Akshaykumar)-The only thing that sets this story apart is that its written by a bollywood actors namesake!!!APart form this, its complete and utter nonsense !! This guy actually thinks that days of yore were better than the mordern period. He even condones public lynching!!!Now call me a yuppie but id rather not live in a day and age where betel juice was considered makeup and a small bird coupled with a comb in ones hair was considered the ultimate status symbol!!!
Bartaman Bharat(Vivekananda) Call me an upstart but i just have to say that the swami is out of his mind !!!He (probably in a state of intoxication) actually pokes fun at Indians of his age for following Western ideals and trying to abolish things like sati and campaighning to give women their due rights!!!Theyre part of our culture he says , and we shouldnt give them up just because the Britishers says theyre wrong!!How it actualy never occurs to him that they are wrong, is anyones guess.Be proud to be backward he says ,for backward is who we are!!!I read this story once...and was overwhelmed by nausea afterwards!!
Bangla Shahitya....Nations succeed because of theirl iterature???Really??I always though that the arts (even non military science) were a byproduct of progress and rich warlords and merchants, not the cause of it!!!

Writing about this has made me feel all nauseous again..ill comment on the poems later if ever!!I realize that the topic is relevant to only a select group of people but the next post will more relevant to the masses on the whole!!!

less than a month into 11 n i already think its shit.the stories sound like very complex poems.the poems sound like lobster thermidor recipes written by 17 eyed aliens who have multi parallel, 11 dimensional thinking abilities. i completely agree abt the balaji telefilms comparison.n congratulations on ur second post after how long again??

I realize this makes me a social outcast, but I did manage to finish Swapnodarshan! Just that and Alal though, so I still have some hope!

Great post- even though I didn't get most of it, because I had CBSE, not ISC.. But well written all the same!

hehe .. nice one .. dont understand Bengali .. (except for some very polite (ahem ahem) words learnt while i was in colg ..

But i can bet that every syllablus has its own 'worst story' strong contendors .. maybe the whole point is exactly what u said : They dont want us to write shit like that !

preventive medication i believe *grin*

CBSE is just the same. except for srikanta by saratchandra (Chattopadhyay, actually)which you are supposed to to overanalyse to death. and they try their best to ruin elective english after making a hash of core, and as for physics, don't get me started.
there, i've had my growl. but nice post. after exam blues, was it?

i am biast towards nishkriti and think its a fine specimen of bengal at that time.. a stark contrast to tagore's chaturanga if u ever read it.

hmm swapnadarshan.. still cant fathom what it was about, i mean theers a limit to everything, people cant be dreaming such stuff even in nightmares

:P

that was hilarious
I agree, Babu would be good if was written in Bangla. If I wanted to read Sanskrit I would have taken it up goddamit.

Swapnadarshan, have not started it..sounds BAD.

I'll tell you what;s wrong with Nishkriti and what's right with it.

a)The Positives-its humorous, the language is simple, the characterisation is good, the society in those times is portrayed very well. Literature need not deal with original, intense issues all the time to be good.

b)Negatives-even if it doesn't need to be original it needs variety, and such a constricted environment cannot give variety. Then it just turns petty and gloomy and mmakes your brain feel clogged.

However if we try we can extract some depth and sensitivity from it.

Seriously man....swapnadarshan makes NO SENSE. And Ekta Kapoor must be related to Saratchandra.I've NEVER read something as boring in my life. And by the way, the ICSE bangla syllabus was just about as bad....it was a TOTAL nightmare..

Eeeesh. Buddhiheen chele. Alaler Ghorer Dulaal is brilliant. You must read it in context. It probably wasnt that common a story when it was written.
